Tunnel Mountain Trail

Hiking Tunnel Mountain Trail

Hike: Tunnel Mountain Trail

Location: Banff National Park

Distance: 2.8 miles

Elevation Gain: 872 feet

Type: Out & Back

Completion Time: 1.5 Hours

If you are looking for an incredible view of the town of Banff, the Tunnel Mountain Trail is for you. Located on the edge of town, this “mountain” is a hill in comparison to cascading Rockies that surround it. The trailhead for this quick afternoon hike is just a half mile from town but be aware that the small parking lot can fill up quickly. The hike begins with a steep climb before crossing Tunnel Mountain road, where it levels out for the rest of the hike. A quick 45-minute stroll will you bring you to the summit which offers 360 degree views of both the Canadian Rockies and the nostalgic town of Banff.

The trail is wide and graveled making it an easy hike for even the most novice adventurer. The summit includes two picnic chairs and a bench, making it the perfect spot for a romantic lunch or romantic dinner. Due to its proximity to the town the hike remains relatively busy year-round, but is a great option when wanting to take the whole family on a fast and fun nature adventure. Dogs on leash are also welcomed, but please be respectful of the beautiful landscape and follow Leave No Trace Principles. More info on Leave No Trace can be found here.

Happy Trails!
